We are seeking a writer with energy, vision, and a commitment to re-branding our MFA and undergraduate creative writing programs. The successful candidate will be appointed untenured (possibly forever) and will be grateful to rot at the rank of Assistant Professor, beginning August 16, 2021.

Responsibilities: 5/5 course load, including workshops, craft seminars, surveys, and shifts at the employee nursery school. Literacy narratives can’t begin early enough. Proof of tuberculosis, syphilitic meningitis and/or opium addiction a plus. At least four novels or collections of stories published by, or under contract with, national presses. That’s national. Not self. Not vanity. Not small. Not university. We’re talking the Big Five.

CREATIVE NONFICTION

Montana (MT) – TT Asst. Professor – Creative Nonfiction Writing – ZOOM INTERVIEW STAGE (edit)

The Department of Writing, Literature and Publishing at Yellowstone University invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor position in Creative Nonfiction Writing. The Department seeks candidates who can contribute to the excellence and voluminous diversity of the Montana academic community through teaching, other forms of engagement with students outside of the classroom that do not include sex and weed, creative work and service activities. The appointment begins September 1, 2021 with a mandatory 21-day orientation in August, which will cover frostbite prevention, bear safety, a campus cow patty heat technology overview, and details pertaining to administration of our Yellowstone Visiting Writers Series.

Yellowstone University and the state of Montana are committed to an active, intentional, and ongoing engagement with diversity—in people, in the curriculum, in the co-curriculum, and in the College’s intellectual, social, cultural, and geographical communities. Yellowstone endorses a framework of inclusive excellence that comes from fully engaging with diversity in all aspects of institutional activities. Despite our lily-white demographics, Yellowstone is committed to strengthening communities, including our workplace, by fostering the development of the intercultural and intersectional competencies necessary for meaningful citizenship in the increasingly complex, pluralistic society found here in Montana.

The Department of Writing, Literature, and Publishing is a vibrant and engaged community of writers, scholars, and publishers. The department has over three full- and part-time faculty members, 15 undergraduate majors, and 12 graduate students in the traditional Creative Writing MFA program, an online MFA program in Popular Writing and Publishing, incarceration track in Popular Writing and Publishing.

Yellowstone University is Montana’s only four-year institution dedicated exclusively to communication and the arts in a liberal arts context, as well as Big Data Analytics and Carpentry. It is located in Montana’s Literary Cultural District in the dynamic multi-cultural city of Koldazell, in close proximity to major publishing houses, arts institutions, and research centers. The college enrolls 412 students from both the United States and Canada.

Qualifications: The ideal candidate will be a creative nonfiction writer with at least three published books and ten years of full-time experience teaching creative writing at the college level. Candidates should have an MFA in creative writing, or a terminal degree in a related field. Candidates who can teach in multiple genres, such as literary or pulp fiction, poetry, and new media/digital mime, are encouraged to apply.

Candidates must have demonstrated ability to work effectively with faculty, students, and staff from diverse backgrounds. A strong commitment to undergraduate education beyond the classroom is essential. Sometimes due to weather extremes, faculty will occasionally travel by horse and sled to and stay for a winter or two in the sod house student dormitories. Heat included as part of generous benefits package. Full health and dental coverage will be in place by 2024.

Primary teaching duties include creative nonfiction writing courses at both the BFA and MFA level, and in both the residential, incarceration, and online programs. Additional responsibilities include academic advising, student mentorship, assisting in the graduate admission process, chairing at least two or three departments, answering phones, running the visiting writer’s series, and serving on most other department committees. There will scarcely be time to complete your own creative work, but we like it that way here in Montana. Our motto: Let’s see what you can really do when it’s Koldazell.

Applicants must submit a cover letter, curriculum vita, and contact information for every reference s/he can think of through the applicant tracking portal @https://yellowstone.peopleadmin.com/postings/18224/koldazell. We reserve the right to remain at Zoom interview stage until early summer. Campus visits will ensue only once the alpine permafrost thaws.

Priority will be given to the first 5,000 applications received by December 1, 2018, but the position is considered open until it is filled. How will you know if we’re interested? You won’t. Although we expect 90% of applicants to be overqualified, we will likely only contact one one-thousandths of you for a cursory, fake-as-all-get-out phone interview farce. We are required by federal and state law to post the position, even though it has secretly already been filled by the chair’s adopted niece. Next year, when the same position re-opens, you have our permission to lose sleep over whether or not to apply a second or third time.

MIXED-GENRE

Old Valor College (MD) – TT Assistant Professor in Creative Writing (Mixed or Multi-Genre) – CAMPUS INTERVIEW STAGE (edit)

We’ll keep it short: The Department of English at Old Valor College invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor in Creative Writing (Mixed or Multi-Genre), with an expected start date of July 4, 2021.

The successful candidate will teach all creative writing courses, supervise largely pointless and unpublishable undergraduate-student thesis projects, participate vigorously in the life of Old Valor’s internationally recognized BFA program, and have a demonstrable commitment to promoting and enhancing diversity. Minimum qualifications: MFA or PhD in Creative Writing or English; one dozen book-length works in any genre published by a singular nationally recognized press (we like to see those multi-book contracts); an unblemished teaching record lightly dusted with universal design principles; and excellent interpersonal skills bordering on the psychic. Preference will be given to applicants with a record of successful teaching in intersectional genres, especially applicants whose creative work addresses the intersectionality between twentieth century sleeve design trends in the female fashion industry and eighteenth century indigenous oral traditions of the Pacific Northwest.

The successful applicant should be prepared to work fall and springs semesters as a campus housing Resident Assistant. Campus housing will be provided at regionally competitive rental rates. No pets.

Candidates should submit a 12-page application outline, a curriculum vita, a writing sample in sterilized blood (up to 25 pages), a statement of teaching philosophy, official graduate transcripts, a syllabus and course content for every course you have ever taught, a speculative syllabus and course content for every course you have ever thought about teaching, and home addresses for four professional references and four extended family members. Email to: http://jobs.ovc.edu/ The application system will solicit letters of references from the individuals listed. Review of applications will begin on November 1, 2020 and continue until the position is filled. But secretly: there is no position open. There never is. We just like to pretend there is, so MFA applicants will go blindly into debt with the unfounded expectation that they will think there is a snowflake’s chance in hell of ever being hired, no matter how many books they have published with national presses.

Q & A on Creative Writing Jobs wiki (edit)

Q: Does anyone know if anyone ever gets hired for any of these jobs? (edit)

A: Not so far as we can tell. (edit)

Q: How terrible are these University application portals? (edit)

A: Oh, very. I just went through one bazillion steps and I do not think any of my attachments saved. I have been at this for years, but at least I make a hundred dollars a lunch shift at The Golden Corral, so my evenings are free for Wag walks and Uber Eats.

Q: Does this process every make you want to jump off a bridge? (edit)
