032: He That Serves Woman

John may have wed both rope and gun;
yes, married a poisoned doctor’s pill;
his view of woman must be undone:
some basilisks make lovers still.
The fly in Fly-Treacle serves the course,
so he that serves woman, woman, woman,
he that serves woman won’t divorce.

For newcomers — a note on 50 @ 25:

Once upon a time, I read that the perfect age for writing quality poetry is twenty-three.  Apparently most of T.S. Elliot’s stuff came out then, the rest of his work being supposedly non-poetic. This resulted in 46 poems written at 23

These poems came out exponentially faster and faster before my 24th birthday on April 30th – and I had to write in genres spanning from epic ballads to limericks to get 46 in on time. I guess that means, for better or worse, that’s the best poetry I’ll ever write. Sad day.

Who was I kidding?

Milton was blind and oldoooooold—when he publishedParadise Regained. Emily Dickenson was dead when her stuff came out. My favorite stuff from T.S. Elliot came out after his conversion. So yeah, old age is good for poetry too. Look at Burns and Berry.

(Side note: the name “Berry Burns” sounds like a shady car salesman).

Will I keep up this twice-my-age regimen every few years? Who knows, but this year, here’s to 50 poems at 25 to be written exponentially faster until I turn 26 on April Thirtyish. I do it this the second time around as a way to say: “Here’s to living life well before it’s too late.”

    GOOD ONE!

    Proverbs 31:10-31, part of the Shabbat meal on Friday nights. The husband reads it to praise his wife…also to further emphasize that Shabbat is seen as a bride. Good for everyone in the family.

      Thanks. This one’s a response to John Gay’s “He That Tastes Woman”, but you’re savvy enough to have already figured that out…

      Yeah, they don’t read Prov. 31 that often in my circles, but they certainly see it as an aspiration and use it often in premarital counseling.

    Yep. Are you going to do more than one from The Beggar’s Opera?

    1. lanceschaubert

      Probably not. And it’s not because it’s not cool or that I wouldn’t have fun or whatever, it’s just that I have most of them written already except for the remaining LotT and the series of 5 or 6 that’ll post on my b-day.

    Trying to see multiple interpretations as I assume with poems that are riffing off of another work are not simply “that was black, this is white”.

    …oh the new Copper Canyon Press Spring catalogue is out. I really enjoy it as it is also a mini anthology and I can read it for weeks.

    Still on my trip. Very arts focused as it turns out. Have been discussing the ability of art to amplify and/or otherwise have an effect on emotions.

      Yeah, I feel that. I certainly believe in having primary and secondary and tertiary (etc.) meanings. I just think it’s nonsense to think that something can mean two contrary things simply because that’s how two separate readers feel. Not that you’re saying that, I’ve just been thinking a mucho about exegesis lately.

      where can I find the CCPS catalogue?

      Sounds fun. Was this just for enjoyment or a class?

    You can look at a PDF or there are instructions explaining how to receive a printed catalogue. Cool ‘n’ Groovy!
