Congrats to James Fox!

I’ve made some serious blunders on this site over the years, but none so big as taking down some 500 posts in 2013 before I moved to NYC — including all of the comments. I did it because I wanted a fresh start and, frankly, I didn’t want the new folks at the office to make fun of me. Don’t ever be ashamed of what gives you joy, friends. That plus a redesign almost completely neutered the engagement of the community here and though thousands of you send me emails, it’s been pulling teeth to get public engagement back. It’s taken me almost a decade to rebuild it and now James Fox has entered the top 7 commenter bracket (top 6 if you don’t include me):

James fox enters the winners circle

Actually, strictly speaking since Doberman / Sedulo / Sedula are all the same person — James is now top 5. Minus me, he’s top 4.

I wanted to post that to inject a little competition into the comments section. I know most commenters are one-offs or two-and-doners (it’s a looooooooong tail on that front), but some of you engage pretty regularly.

Also good news:

Pretty much all of the top commented-upon pages in the last year have been recent posts.

Seems like we — together — are starting to right the ship.

But yeah: looks like the top comment spots are fair game now. IT’S ANYONE’S BALLGAME MOVING FORWARDS. But especially James Fox.

Thoughts?

And creative thinking as things shift. Luckily, social media imploded moving things back towards newsletters and blogs

    Lancelot,
thank you, for that congrats, but I fear that continues my jinxed lament – that the late Andy Warhol promised us all a few minutes of fame – when fortune would have been so much better!
Now, you said it’s anybody’s ballgame now. Check your email –

Speaking of a ballgame, I have a photo (with releases on file from the cadets from a High School educational re-entry program, the Discovery Challenge Academy in Lathrop, Calif. The photo I sent shows them handling a flag ceremony opening a museum’s exhibit of “America’s Baseball Greats.” The Cadets LOVED displaying the replica of the Fort Sumter Garrison Storm Flag, with its diamond pattern, AND then explaining to the crowd that this diamond pattern is as close as Abner Doubleday, in his time, got to designing a baseball diamond. He was in fact famous, not for a baseball, but, for a cannon ball… having hoisted this storm flag after rebel cannons fired on the fort, initiating the Civil War. Then, US Army Captain Abner Doubleday was given the honor of firing the FIRST cannon shot back at the rebels.
A new ballgame, yes, in deedy!

Wild. Thanks for commenting as always and the picture. I’m headed to bed but you’re always teaching me something new

Lance (or Starbuck’s Nance?) you wrote
“… Don’t ever be ashamed of what gives you joy, friends…
So I must admit, it is not the seeking of joy that sends me to the comments section. It’s been writer’s block.
Or, as mi esposa would say “you’re goofing off”….
hmmm, maybe it is joy after all.
    Carry on!

      Writer’s block sends you back?
