Name of the Wind analysis — Chapter 13

Hey friends, long time no write about the Name of the Wind, Kingkiller, etc. I’ve intended to do a Name of the Wind analysis reread (not to mention the other books) for some time now. —

You should assume spoilers henceforth! Forthwith! This post shall take a fortnight of hours to read!

Name of the Wind Analysis — Ch 13:

Turn your hymnals to the appropriate page and chapter. Again, silence is his sign.

“We have everything here at the Waystone.”

Really? Everything excepting customers?

“Hard-soled boots…” or hooves. Great detail.

Bast has blue eyes. Now that we have the eyes of all the children —

  • 1. Green
  • 2. Green
  • 3. Blue
  • 4. Brown
  • 5. Chartreuse
  • 6. Changing colors
  • 7. Coal Black

— has anyone checked the fae we know for these? Outside of this?

It is again fascinating the timing of switching to the frame narrative and moving to Bast. We were just talking about siring a child with a wandering God, the Chandrian, and magic. Here we meet the Bast-ard fae magician immediately afterwards.

This, in film, would be one of those scenes where you get a transition through contrast. It’s great.

“In fairness…” Good pun for the man in hooves and goat eyes.

It’s interesting that in this one fight, we have what seems to be sympathy, naming, fae magic, and singing.

“One of two score people in the world who knows the name of iron.”

One is Kvothe, one is Haliax, how many down the line do we need to get to before we get to twenty? How many Amyr are there?

Again, Twilight is between the sun and moon. And he’s a prince. “Son of Remmen” — which is a frame, a hem, or a restraint. I kind of like Son of The Frame myself.

Tylwyth Mael.

That’s actually Welsh.

It’s literally Welsh for Prince of Immediate Family

I’m assuming the answer is “mine.”

Prince of Twilight (Felurian).

And prince of the immediate family (Kvothe).

It could potentially mean “the immediate family of The Prince,” which creates other problems.

“Binding of Iron” — this is the first sympathetic bond, again, and it’s meant to be coupled with the name of iron. So yes, if all iron is one iron, we again have a direct connect to the living heateater.

Or something happening beyond the mere alar of Chronicler and the name he knows. Something more collaborative:

“The follow of willful pride” is again the theme here.

“Dark and fierce”

Kvothe’s eyes in this scene are all black. How does green get so dark it’s black?

5 fingers and flesh and blood.

Does Kvothe have that?

And Chronicler doubts the dark-eyed person is the same as the innkeeper.

The obvious question is is he?

I’ll put this at the end of each chapter so we can actually navigate the text. Because this is getting unwieldy — we’re going to eventually have dozens of links — I’m going to just link to the category from here on out:
