Unfortunately for the sailors, (and a trivia question resulted = when were the last Civil War service-members buried )
it WAS what they were watching that brought their demise.
It has been the speculation that the Hunley sank after successfully torpedoing the USS Housatonic (the torpedo was RAMMED using a long spar affixed to the front of the CSA Hunley – a submarine) the crew apparently backed off and the captain must have opened the hatch to ensure he saw the ship go down. But the explosion had created a backwash of waves (think dropping a rock in a pond to create ripples) the hatch had only a few inches of gunwale (no “conning tower” yet invented) thus the waves swamped that tube and it went down with all hands. 140 years later the Hunley was located and raised. Remains of the crew were removed and buried with great pomp and circumstance in Magnolia Cemetery, Charleston, South Carolina on April 17, 2004.

You are probably correct. The Hunley was a tube bulit to be a submarine, but more than a half dozen sat inside, with a handcrank for turn the properller. My bad.
OK a great joke, stay with it herre, in Wizard of Id, King and his lackey Rodney are in the throne room. A sudden explosion shakes the whole room. Next panel. They are both hiding behind the throne and Rodney says “Sire, several terrorist groups are taking credit for the explosion.” next panel King narrows his eyes and asks, ‘Which one do you think did it?” Rodney says, “Whichever one built the boiler.”
