How do we overcome the struggles, difficulties, temptations, and obstacles in life? For me, it’s wisdom; and it can be found in many places. If you look carefully enough, there are many phenomena in our daily lives that impart wisdom to make us more learned. Other than practicing mindfulness, my contemplative practices are an amalgamation of Stoicism, Buddhism, Christianity, and a cornucopia of various sources. Instead of treating the works as a religious text, I use them as great teaching tools to help myself and especially others during times of intense suffering. The theme of meditation and wisdom has been intertwined since antiquity and have been represented in various works; from the Book of Wisdom in the Old Testament, to Epictetus and Aurelius in Ancient Greece, to Lao Tzu during the Warring States Period, and to Thich Nhat Hanh and his contemporaries today. There is no best time to practice but staying attuned and aware of what is around is always a good start. We sometimes think that we can’t be acquainted with our spiritual side because of all the concrete jungle, toxic work environment, and traffic congestion, and we need some kind of spiritual retreat to clear our mind or start practicing. But do know that in there too, in such places of adversity and frustration, are life parables and lessons to be learned and found; like the story of the Lotus Flower, Gautama Buddha, and The Temptation of Saint Anthony. Reflections is a meditative piece to induce the listener into a state of pensiveness and reflect on past mistakes. The piece ends off with a bell-like figure; akin to a monastery, reminding the listener to wake up from their meditation and move on.
You're so welcome!
