And They Did

I recall when anti-Semites were
Pretty damn pathetic, all aslur,
Variegated, rude,
Like a quantity of shag
Rugs & over-barbecued
Poultry swaddled in the Rebel flag,

Idling at some random Hebrew Y.,
And, assuming aim across the dry
Haze that panicky,
Terminal fatigue begot,
Lightly wounding two or three
Guatemalans in the parking lot.

Now they’ve made a shul a bloody burl.
Bastards even shot a little girl,
Frills & pink barrette,
Broadcasting her final throe
On the goddamned internet.
And the mothers say: I told you so.

And they did. Yes. When the child died,
I had no idea at all that I’d
Even made a bet.
Only the broad, freshly-still,
Rifle-turreted roulette
May announce if we have wagered ill.*

*Author’s Note: “It seems that I’ve conflated the Pittsburgh synagogue shooting (27 October 2018) with the Christchurch mosque shooting (15 March 2019); it was the latter atrocity that was broadcasted on Facebook Live. Since betting on the absolute worst has recently become a winning posture, I have no doubt that live broadcast will soon become a standard feature of the American-style mass shooting.”
