Tara and I had the distinct pleasure of attending the evening with Marilynne Robinson hosted by CFW in Manhattan, similar to the one with Christian Wiman the night of the JFK protests. The highlight of the evening, for me at least, came when M ( I can see her as the mother of James Bond, yes I can ) completely obliterated the pessimistic Calvinist view of the world by appealing to a sort of Thomistic or Franciscan metaphysics by quoting John Calvin. That’s right: she used Calvin to rebuke a roomful of Calvinists. Beautiful.
