Some places have a certain smell
The gymnasium when I was young
Like tin and sweat – a scent that makes
Me anxious and excited
A field before a soccer game
Fresh grass, and the air of success
This courtroom has a smell
It’s the first one I’ve ever been in
What pains await me on the far side
Of its sense memory?
Will I ever be able to enter a court again
Without feeling like a failed man?
