Went through the Tor online archive today. While there, I drummed up what I think are the best forty stories published at Tor online since 2008. They move from the most recent to the least recent, with #1 published in 2017 and #40 published in 2008.
The best Tor online stories includes tales written by the likes of Cory Doctorow, Brandon Sanderson, Jo Walton, Joe Abercrombie, Alyssa Wong, and Amal El-Mohtar. They talk of maidens and fabulous beasts, elephants and corpses, wikihistories, astronauts, and martian obelisks.
Honestly, there’s a reason TOR online pays so well: they host some of the greatest sci fi, fantasy, and speculative fiction on the internet in addition to their regular discussion of novels and issues and ideas floating around the SF / F community.
That said, here’s what I came up with:
-
Party Discipline by Cory Doctorow
-
The Library of Lost Things by Matthew Bright
-
These Deathless Bones by Cassandra Khaw
-
The Martian Obelisk by Linda Nagata
-
Waiting on a Bright Moon by Jy Yang
-
eyes I dare not meet in dreams by Sunny Moraine
-
When Stars Are Scattered by Spencer Ellsworth
-
The Ordinary Woman and the Unquiet Emperor by Catherynne M. Valente
-
Anabasis by Amal El-Mohtar
-
The Jump Rope Rhyme by Jo Walton
-
Sonnet: Against Entropy by John M. Ford
-
Overtime by Charles Stross
-
The Cat Who Walked a Thousand Miles by Kij Johnson
-
Firstborn by Brandon Sanderson

Also: keep your eyes out because I’m planning on doing a reread of Rothfuss here soon. It’s going to take some time, but I plan on doing it in the next few months — I’m buying myself a copy of the tenth anniversary edition and going to go step-by-step. If you stumbled onto this page, I’d love to have you join us.
