Tangled by Dan Fogelman

“Phenomenal.”

First thing I thought as I walked my stupor off right outside the theatre last night while my wife used the restroom.  I seriously had a buzz from this kids flick.  Dan Fogelman, the guy who wrote Cars and Bolt pulled off a grand-slam with this screenplay.  I searched for a free copy in the typical domains for old screenplays, but it’s unavailable now.  If you find a copy, let me know.  I’d love to read it.

The jokes are well-timed, the dialog’s fresh, and the narrative voice – I’d sell off half of my library for the power to write a narrator into my book as likable (and enjoyable) as Flynn Rider.

Attention Alchemists: The movie has a perfect Opus Alchimicum. As I’ve said elsewhere, it’s not as simple as having the colors black, white, and red in the movie.  We need baptisms, crows, golden suns, peacock tails and the like to pull of the golden story-arc.  Pull it off Dan did, and rightly so for the Grimm brothers used literary alchemy themselves.  John Granger over at Hogwarts Professor mentioned Cinderella as an example of an old work that does this, but it’s not the only one.  The classic story of Rapunzel with golden hair (not to mention Rumplestiltskin) also serve us as far as literary alchemy goes.

The Oscar should go to Fogelman for how innovative and tight this screenplay is.  However, as noted elsewhere, he should get the best adaptation and not the best original. Do remember, the Grimm brothers are cited on IMDB as original authors of the story, even if they’ve been dead for hundreds of years.

Go see Tangled in theatres before you miss the chance.
